Services

Having a massage does more than just relax your body and mind. There are specific physiological and psychological changes that occur, even more so when massage is viewed and used as a preventative, regular therapy and not an occasional indulgence.

— Karrie Osborn, Contributing Editor, Massage & Bodywork magazine.

Clinical Massage Therapy Services:
There are over 150 types of massage therapy techniques. Although Vermont Massage and Wellness does not perform all of these, we offer both clinical and relaxation massage services that are both nurturing and highly effective at producing results. See our benefits page for more details.

Swedish Massage Swedish massage currently represents the western "standard" for massage. Also commonly known as "therapeutic massage" swedish massage represents a general massage system that focuses on increasing circulation and promoting relaxation. Because swedish massage stimulates the parasympathetic nervous system or the "rest and digest mode"  in the body it activates the body's own healing processes as it melts away tension and stress.

Deep Tissue Massage: Deep tissue massage is a type of clinical massage aimed at the deeper tissue structures of the muscle and fascia, also called connective tissue. This technique uses some of the same movements and techniques as swedish massage, neuromuscular therapy, trigger point therapy, and myofacial release. The pressure will generally be more intense than swedish massage but should never hurt. The goal of deep tissue massage is to release chronic muscle tension through slower strokes and more direct pressure across the grain of the muscles. Deep tissue massage is a process of detection of stiff or painful areas by determining the quality and texture of the deeper layers of musculature, and slowly applying pressure into these layers to affect change at the cellular level to improve muscle health, decrease feelings of tension and stiffness, and eliminate or manage pain.

Affecting change at the cellular layer of muscle, tendon, ligament, and fascia can be felt in some cases right away but in general take  4-6 visits spread out over a month's time. Maintaining tissue health is vitally important to eliminate or manage body tension, stiffness, and pain so bi-monthly or monthly visits are recommended once the initial complaint has been addressed.

Foot Reflexology Reflexology is the physical act of applying pressure to the feet and hand with specific thumb, finger and hand techniques without the use of oil or lotion.. Reflexology is based on a system of zones and reflex areas that reflect an image of the body on the feet and hands with a premise that such work effects a physical change to the body. Reflexology has a profoundly relaxing effect on the nervous system and also helps maintain foot health by restoring and maintaining flexibility, circulation, and releasing tension in the foot's muscles, tendons, ligaments, and even bones.
